Plano City Council Acts to Promote CPR Training |
For Immediate Release Contact: Aug. 22, 2008
Jim Dickerson Assistant Chief of EMS Phone: (972) 941-5459
On Monday, Aug. 25, Plano Mayor Pat Evans and City Council members will not only encourage CPR training but they will also take it. Prior to the regular council meeting at 5 p.m., Plano Fire Department’s Medical Director Dr. Mark Gamber and UT Southwestern Professor and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine Dr. Paul Pepe will instruct Council through a 30-minute basic CPR/AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator) demonstration. The training will be in an open format in the Council Chamber of Plano Municipal Center, 1520 K Avenue.
The doctors hope to help Council members encourage Plano residents to learn CPR. The focus of the training will be predominantly on chest compression CPR and how it works in conjunction with AED use.
Plano Fire Rescue has responded to an average of 105 cardiac arrests a year over the past three years. Of those there has been a 10% survivor rate. Simply said, having family members and neighbors trained to start CPR before emergency responders arrive can improve the rate of survival. This makes CPR not only a necessity but a partnership between the community and emergency responders. Plano’s 10% CPR survivor rate beats the national average of 6%. In this year alone, Plano has two documented cases where bystanders have responded with an AED at the scene. Both patients were able to walk out of the hospital as a real reminder to family and friends the value of CPR/AED education. |
